NAMES OF WAR DEAD PLACED ON CENOTAPH
By Ted Andrew (Regina, Sk.)

As a former resident of the small hamlet of Crandall, Mb., I assisted in organizing a Memorial Service there.
The names of men from the Crandall area who lost their lives in World Wars I & II were placed on the Crandall Cenotaph.
Many years ago, the names of the men who lost their lives from the Miniota Municipality, Mb., had been enshrined on a cenotaph at site of the municipal office in Miniota.
The following is the article:

“On Sunday, July 15, 2007, the 125th anniversary of the Crandall, Manitoba community, a Memorial Service was held at the local Cenotaph. A plaque bearing the names of men from the area who lost their lives in World Wars I & II, placed on the Cenotaph, was unveiled during the Service by Ivan Lawrence of Crandall, the brother of Kenneth Lawrence and Ruby Matheson of Hamiota, Man., sister of Wayne Colbeck, two of the men being honoured.
The plaque bore the names of seven men who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War I and three who lost their lives in World War II. The honour guard at the Cenotaph was comprised of three members of the Canadian Forces and R.C.M.P member three of whom were originally from the Crandall area. Royal Canadian Legion personnel from several surrounding branches were in attendance and formed a Colour Party for the Service.
Wreaths were laid by Zone Commander Walter Murray of Oak Lake, Man., John Stowe, President of the Miniota Legion Branch, accompanied by Marilee Minion of Edmonton, representing her father a World War II Veteran.

Ken and Rick Padfield of Medicine Hat, Alberta, nephews of George Padfield who lost his life in World War II, accompanied by Christine Little of Decker, Man., great niece of Edward Little who lost his life in World War I, laid a wreath on behalf of the families.
Tanner Booth and Shane Menzies members of Strathclair, Mb. Air Cadet Squadron #317 in company with James Hunkin of Crandall laid a wreath on behalf of Canadian Youth. Bill Clark, Reeve of the Miniota Municipality and Aline de Montigny of Crandall, laid a wreath on behalf of the Municipality and Crandall Community. A large crowd was in attendance many of which were relatives of those being honoured."
