THE CANADIAN LEGION
By the late Mr. E. Barnes
In the fall of 1928 a group of veterans of World War I met together, and out of the meeting, a branch of the Legion was formed. It recieved its charter November 6, 1928, and was known as the Miniota Branch No. 66 of the Canadian Legion. Its main objective was to assist veterans, their widows and dependants, and obtain from our government those things which they considered rightly theirs.
Since that time this branch and also the Canadian Legion has expanded its membership until today it is a strong and well-organized body of veterans, composed of servicemen from World Wars I and II and the Korean War.
This branch of the Legion, comprising members from all parts of the municipality, looks after the two cenotaphs in this municipality, and since their erection, has continuously held Memorial Day services at Miniota and Remembrance Day services at Crandall. This is the only municipal branch in Manitoba; comprising the villages of Miniota, Crandall, Isabella, Arrow River and Beulah. It holds its meetings once a month in rotation in each of these villages. It assists in the upkeep of all cemeteries in this municipality where there is a veteran's grave and sees that each grave has a headstone.
The Charter members were: T.H. Wheatland, G.B. Hammond, G.L. Woods, R.M. Oliver, B.S. Woods, T.A. Deans, G.L. Armstrong, J. Desmond, W.H. Hurlin, A.S. Dennis, M.P. Scutt, F. Franklin, William Pierce, G. Apsey, E.S. Martin, W.A. Shean, W.S. Collier, G. Heyhoe, P.C. Watts and W.H. Kirton.

ROLL OF HONOUR
Crandall Community joined with the many others across the nation when the "Call to Arms" came in World Wars I and II. The records show that 56 men joined the forces in World War I and 59 men and women in World War II.
When each member of the Armed Forces returned home after the close of the war in 1945, he (she) was given a "Welcome Home" party under the auspices of the W.I. There were eleven parties in all. Each single person received a pen as a gift and each married one a bedspread. This was little enough to do in gratitude for those who had served their country. Three young men of the community paid the supreme sacrifice, and in commemoration, the people of the Crandall Community presented their families with a Bible.
