Charles Ralph Lee

1900 - November 13, 1976


CRANDALL. Charles Ralph Lee, in his 77th year, passed away at his home in Crandall, Manitoba, on Saturday, November 13, 1976. Funeral services were held on Wednesday November 17th at Crandall United Church with Rev. Don McNeill officiating, Campbell's Funeral Home, Hamiota, were in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were: Gerald Shier, Stan Doupe, William Cowling, Ted Little, William Taylor, and Herald Hall. Honorary Pallbearers were: William Philip, E.E. Shier, Elmer Douglas, Clifford Gray, Roy Amy, Ed. Morison, F.A. Shoemaker, , Delymar Johnstone. Ushers were: Bob Hirst and Brian Johnston.

Charlie -was born in Crandall November 5, 1900 the 7th son of Ralph and Elizabeth Lee. He received his education at Carlingville and Crandall Schools well as Waterloo Academy Quebec. He commenced work at the age of 14 with the Northern Crown Bank and in 1921 moved to Swift Current Saskatchewan where he was employed with the Massey Harris Company and he later managed the Dominion Life there. In 1926 he married Winona Marlow of Swift Current and in 1932 they returned to Crandall take up farming.

In 1958 he purchased the local Wawanesa Insurance Agency which he operated until 1975 when he retired due to ill health.

Throughout his 40 odd years of farming he raised Purebred Polled Hereford cattle and had many friends and acquaintances in the cattle industry.

Charlie was an enthusiastic sportsman, both as a participant in earlier years and later as a coach and manager. He successfully coached several Provincial Championship teams in baseball and hockey. In 1957 as a coach of the Oil Dome All Star baseball team, Canadian Pony League Champions, he was made a Provost of the Order of the Buffalo Hunt of the Province of Manitoba, an honour which he cherished. Until the time of his death he was an avid fan and could be seen at nearly all local sporting events.

Charlie is survived by his wife Winona of Crandall, a brother Stuart of Brantford, Ontario; two sisters - Gladys Park of Calgary and Brownie Wingo of Athens, Georgia, U.S.A. There are three sons -Gerald M. of Calgary, C. Ralph of Morris, Manitoba and Donald B. of Crandall. Two daughters - Lorna Eastcott of Crandall and Sylvia Haverstick of Winnipeg. There are thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
