Charlie Norrie
March 10, 1921 - Jan. 18, 2009
NORRIE: Charlie passed away Jan. 18, 2009 in his 88th year in
Vancouver, BC. Charlie was born in Crandall, MB on March 10, 1921.
Charlie was the son of John and Helen Norrie and had six other
brothers and three sisters.
On Oct. 15, 1946 he married Phyllis
Sutherland of Vancouver, BC. They have three sons Gordon, Ronald
and Robbie and two daughters Lindsay and Lauren. Charlie and his
first wife Phyllis parted ways and he remarried Eunice Johnson.
As a young man he worked for neighbours in the Decker district.
During the Second World War Charlie was with the Queens Own Cameron
Highlanders until he was taken prisoner at Dieppe and spent the
next two years and nine months in a prisoner of war camp in Stalag,
Germany.
After he was liberated and returned to Canada he spent a
short time at home before going to Vancouver where he obtained
work at the Roller Mills for 20 years. He then went to work at
the Correctional Institute at Haney as a correctional officer.
He also started working with a plumber, and became a licensed
plumber.
Charlie often said when he was in the war camp in Germany,
if it wasn't for the Red Cross he would have never made it back.
Burial of cremations will take place at a later date.
