Dan Cowling

December 4, 1879 - December 26, 1964


Enters Into Rest

After a series of short illnesses Dan Cowling, a pioneer of the Crandall district, passed away in Hamiota Hospital, December 26th, 1964, at the age of 85 years and 22 days.

He was born near Orangeville, Ontario, December 4th, 1879 and spent his younger days in Ontario and Huron, Michigan before coming west to Manitoba. After a few years in and around Kenton district he rejoined his parents who had taken up their home on the farm now owned by T. Van Buskirk north of Crandall. He started farming on his own a mile west of his father's farm 4 years before his marriage to Mary Louna Torrance of Blaris, Man., January 5th, 1916. After half a century of farming he and his wife retired to Hamiota where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his wife Louie, four daughters, Mrs. W.M. Farquhar (Pauline), Winnipeg; Mrs. Russell Lelond (Joy) Miniota; Mrs. George Arnold, (Marie), Winnipeg; and Mrs. A.E. Lakatos (Viola), Winnipeg and one son William on the home farm at Crandall. One daughter, Grace predeceased him in 1927.

Surviving also are two brothers, Mills of Santa Monica, California; and Charles of Vancouver; two sisters, Mrs. R.A. Johnston and Mrs. J.W. Shetler both of Vancouver.

Mr. Cowling was a member of Hamiota United Church. He served two terms on the Council of Miniota Municipality and since his retirement has been very active in Hamiota Lawn Bowling, Senior Citizens and other social and community activities.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, December 30th, at 2 p.m. in Hamiota United Church with Rev. Clark officiating.

Honourary Pallbearers were: Messrs T. Grey, H. Harrison, Elery Sunley, Will Grey, Bert Decker, and Fred Wyatt. Active Pallbearers were Dave Dales, E. Morris, L. Caldwell, T. Van Buskirk, G. Grey and L. Hunkin.

Ushers J. Riddell and N. Curll.

Internment was in Crandall Cemetery.
