James Todd

March 10, 1858 (Chronicles states 1859) - November 23, 1948


The citizens of Crandall district paid their last respects to one of pioneer business men, in the person of James Todd, who passed away after a long illness in the Brandon general hospital, Tuesday of last week, November 23, at the age of 91 years.

Born at Fergus, Ont. Mr. Todd attended school at Salem, Ont. until he was 14. During the following years he worked for farmers around the district until he came west in 1878, and took up a homestead at Rapid City, when he farmed for four years and then opened a grocery and flour business in Rapid City. Two years later he went to the Rocky Mountains and engaged in the restaurant business following win the C.P.R. as they extended the system. In 1886 he returned to his homestead for four Years. He next went to Oak River and established a general store and extended with a branch store in Crandall under management of his son George. In 1902 fire destroyed the Oak River store and then he moved to Crandall and erected a larger store. He retired in 1936, when he retired and resided in town.

The funeral held on Friday afternoon in the United church was largely attended and was conducted by Rev. J.M. Wilson. There were many floral tributes. Burial was made in Crandall cemetery, the pallbearers being Wal. Hyndman, C.E. Shier, E. Hazelwood, H. Doupe, C. Lewis and R.L. Dickey.

Surviving is a wife and three sons: George Vancouver; Dave H., Saskatoon; (present at the funeral) and Glen, Timmins, Ont. and five daughters: Mrs. V.P. Bond, Edmonton; Mrs. Joy Marpole, Vancouver; Mrs. D.L. Johnston, Crandall; Mrs. A.G. Adams, Los Angeles; Mrs. M. Fisher, Creston, BC., and two brothers, John, of Souris, and Thomas, of Beresford.


CRANDALL, Man., Nov. 29 (Special) — The funeral service for James Todd, age 91, was held in Crandall United church Friday. Mr. Todd came west from Fergus, Ont., in 1880, and homesteaded near Rapid City, later operating a general store at Oak River. He came to Crandall in 1903, where he operated a general store until he retired about 1940. Mr. Todd was a member of the Methodist church, coming to the United church at the time of union. His widow, three sons and five daughters survive. Rev. J.M. Wilson officiated. Mr. Todd died in Brandon hospital, Nov. 23, after an illness of about two years. The pallbearers were C.W. Lewis, H. Doupe, C.E. Shier, R.L. Dickey, Wallace Hyndman and E. Hazelwood.
