Matthew Ed. Vance
1875 - August 23, 1949
The death of Matthew Ed. Vance at his home in Rocanville, Sask. on
Tuesday August 23rd, marked the passing of one of the pioneers of the
Crandall district.
Born in Clifford, Ont. in 1875, Mr. Vance came to Brandon in 1898 and
the following year settled on a farm in the Crandall district. Here he
helped to build the first grain elevator while the railroad was still
under construction.
In 1899 he married Emily Ammerman, of Rocanville, formerly of Clifford,
Ont. She predeceased him in 1929.
He was an Elder of the United church and taught the Bible class in
Sunday school for many years. He was also a life member of the Canadian
Order of Foresters and interested himself in all local activities.
As a noted horseman he did much to improve the Percheron heavy draught
type.
In 1929 he sold his farm and moved to Rocanville. In 1934 he married
Katherine Chilton of that town, who survives him.
There is also a son, Russell E., of Crandall, and a daughter,
Mrs. J.S. Selbie, of Brandon, and one grand daughter.
The funeral service was held on the Thursday following in the United
church, Rocanville. The Elders of the church acted as pall bearers.
Burial was made in Crandall cemetery, the committal sentences being read
by Rev.J.M. Wilson. The casket was laid to rest by C. Lewis, H. Doupe,
R.L. Johnston, W. Rivers, H. Lints and H. Quinton.
