Matthew Ed. Vance

1875 - August 23, 1949

The death of Matthew Ed. Vance at his home in Rocanville, Sask. on Tuesday August 23rd, marked the passing of one of the pioneers of the Crandall district.

Born in Clifford, Ont. in 1875, Mr. Vance came to Brandon in 1898 and the following year settled on a farm in the Crandall district. Here he helped to build the first grain elevator while the railroad was still under construction.

In 1899 he married Emily Ammerman, of Rocanville, formerly of Clifford, Ont. She predeceased him in 1929.

He was an Elder of the United church and taught the Bible class in Sunday school for many years. He was also a life member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and interested himself in all local activities.

As a noted horseman he did much to improve the Percheron heavy draught type.

In 1929 he sold his farm and moved to Rocanville. In 1934 he married Katherine Chilton of that town, who survives him.

There is also a son, Russell E., of Crandall, and a daughter, Mrs. J.S. Selbie, of Brandon, and one grand daughter.

The funeral service was held on the Thursday following in the United church, Rocanville. The Elders of the church acted as pall bearers. Burial was made in Crandall cemetery, the committal sentences being read by Rev.J.M. Wilson. The casket was laid to rest by C. Lewis, H. Doupe, R.L. Johnston, W. Rivers, H. Lints and H. Quinton.
