Margaret CALDWELL (nee Smith)

July 17, 1918 - Dec. 23, 2008


CALDWELL: Margaret passed away peacefully at Birch Lodge in Hamiota on Dec. 23, 2008, at the age of 90. She was born on July 17, 1918, and was the seventh child of a family of 10 of John and Rachel Smith. Her schooling was taken at Crandall, and she went to Hamiota for grade 12. She travelled to Winnipeg for a Business Course at Success Business College.
While in Hamiota she met her longtime partner. Lorne Caldwell, and they were married in 1938. They had two children, Lorna and Lynn. Lorne served overseas during the war as a medical orderly, and Marg returned to the home farm at Chumah. After the war they both worked at Caldwell Motors in Hamiota. They were married 66 years.
Sports were Margaret's life. She and Lorne spent many nights skating hundreds of rounds. Marg was an avid curler, and curled into her 80's. She received a life membership in the Ladies Curling Club, and enjoyed their yearly banquets. In her early years she played fast-ball at Crandall with three of her sisters. In later years, she played ball with the Hamiota ladies, and They travelled to all sports days around. The Hamiota Red Sox were one of her favourite teams, and she kept score for many years. She was a faithful fan in the rink, gymnasium and sports grounds to watch all ages.
Her favourite pastime in later years was travelling with her sisters to Palm Springs, Vancouver and Toronto to name a few places. On one occasion all seven sisters went to Lake Tahoe. She was the navigator, and also filled the car with gas when there was no full serve. The United Church Choir and the UCW meetings were also part of Marg's life. She was a frequent visitor of the shut-ins and a faithful volunteer at Birch Lodge to help with feeding.
The funeral service was held on Jan. 8, 2009 in the Hamiota United Church with Rev, Barbara Rediker officiating. The eulogy was given by granddaughter, Kerri Hayhurst, and a favourite hymn, "All Things Bright and Beautiful" was sung by great granddaughters. Halle and Kamryh Hayhurst. Marg is survived by her children, daughter Lorna (Allan) Robertson, and son, Lynn Edith Caldwell, and grandchildren Kerri (Chris) Hayhurst, Randy (Jeannine) Robertson, Jeff (Michelle) Robertson, Kim (Brian) Enns, Carl (Trish) Caldwell, Shelley (Lyle) Heaman, 16 great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Olive and Velma Smith. Alice Johnston and brother Jack (Peggy) Smith, sister-in-laws Vi Smith and Kay Caldwell. Marg was predeceased by her husband Lorne, parents Rachel and John, brothers Newton and Herb, sisters Rena, Pearl and Eileen, sister-in-law Betty, brother-in-laws Cecil, Buzz, Everett, Pick and Jack.
