Signs: Meadow Blazingstar / Canada Anemone

Meadow Blazingstar
(Liatris ligulistylis -A. Nels- K. Schum.)

This erect perenial has a tuberous rootstalk and grows 10 to 60cm tall. The stem is reddish and somewhat hairy. The leaves are very narrow and clasp the stem. The flowers are a deep rosy purple and protrude from a head made of purple tipped bracts. This plant prefers moist areas and is rare in the prairies.


Canada Anemone
(Anemone canadensis L.)

The large white flowers (2.5 to 3.0cm across) of this plant are a common sight in June and July. It is native in the prairies and common around the edges of aspen popular groves. Stems of this perenial are covered with hairs and grow from a bulbous taproot. The leaves clasp the stems and are divided in a toothed palm shape.

  • Prairie Crocus (Anemone Patens L. var. Wolfgangiana -Bess- Koch)
