The Sparrow Hawk is distributed throughout North America. Its
breeding and summer range is in the northern regions while in the
winter months it migrates to the southern United States. To catch its
prey the Sparrow Hawk will hover over a small section of grass area
observing the movements below. When it spots a likely looking prey it
will swoop in for the kill. The Sparrow Hawk does not construct a
formal nest; instead it will use a crow's nest, small depressions in the
ground or cracks in cliffs. The female lays 4 to 6 eggs which are
incubated for 30 days. The male can be recognized by its smaller size
and more colourful plumage.
