DIBBLEE:
The death of George Love Dibblee of Miniota occurred suddenly at Brandon
General Hospital on January 16, 1979. Mr. Dibblee was born on
November 7, 1888, in Moore's Mills, N.B., third son of Dr. George O.
and Mrs. Emma Dibblee. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers
William Raymond in 1914, Edwin Walter in 1974, and his wife
Olive (nee Thompson) in 1968. He is survived by daughters Buda,
of Toronto, and Diane (Mrs. John Fotheringhame), Brandon,
granddaughter Margaret Fotheringhame, nieces Mrs. Helen Maxwell,
Blairmore, Alberta., Mrs. Frances Miller, Calgary, and nephew
Walter Dibblee of Victoria, B.C.
Mr. Dibblee attended the Normal School
in Fredericton for two years then came west to Manitoba where he
taught for a year at Tamarisk before going to southern Alberta. There he
rode for some of the large cattle companies of the day. At the outbreak
of the First World War he joined a Montreal regiment, the Fifth
Canadian Mounted Rifles, and arrived in France in 1915. He was wounded in
action several times, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal after
the attack on Regina Trench in June during the 1916 Battles of the Somme,
and received his commission in the field. He was with his regiment when
they entered Monson November 11, 1918.
From 1919 until his retirement in
1959, Mr. Dibblee taught in Manitoba schools, first for three years at
Amaranth, then for two years as vice-principal at Souris Collegiate.
In 1925 he went to Isabella as principal, and from there in 1932 he moved
to Crandall, where he was principal until he became ill in 1954. His last
teaching years were in Arrow River, In 1964 he moved with Mrs. Dibblee to
Miniota, where he resided until shortly before his death, enjoying visits
from many ex-pupils and other friends.
Mr. Dibblee was a member of the
Anglican Church, and for many years a member of the Masonic Lodge and the
Royal Canadian Legion. In his younger years he was an expert canoeist,
hunter and fisherman, and always took much pleasure from extensive
reading.
The funeral service was held at Holy Trinity Church in Miniota on
Saturday, January 20, with friend, Rev. George House officiating. At the
conclusion of the service there was a tribute by members of the Royal
Canadian Legion, with Mr. Grant Hyndman in charge. Pallbearers were:
Jim Clegg, Don Forsyth, Grant Hyndman, Vern Lockhart, Tom Rollo, and
Edwin Wadham. Honourary pallbearers were: Keith Armitage, Bill Barrett,
Rollie Clegg, John Finkbeiner, Alex Sararas, and Ed Stowe. Interment was
in the Miniota cemetery.
