John Thomas Finkbeiner
March 9, 1883 - May 28, 1954
To those who had enjoyed a talk with Jack Finkbeiner in Miniota on
Thursday afternoon, and elsewhere on that day, received quite a shock
when it was learned that he had passed away early on Friday morning,
May 28th, suddenly, from a heart attack. He had finished his breakfast
and went outside, and it was then that he was taken ill and taken into
the house, where he passed away. He had complained of not feeling well
on that morning.
Mr. Finkbeiner was born on March 9, 1883, at Crediton, Ont. and came to
Manitoba at the age of 21. For about three years he worked in the
Crandall district and later in the Isabella district. In 1907 he took over
the home farm.
His marriage to Rosetta Borland took place at the home of the brides
parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Borland, in Crandall, in December 1907.
He is survived by his wife and three sons: Elmer J. at home; Sydney,
Cardale, and Edward, St.James, and two daughters, Mrs. W. Cumberland,
Penticton, B.C. and Mrs. Geo. Reid, Cardale. One brother, Harry, at
Isabella, and six sisters Mrs A. Mesoner and Edna, Chicago; Mrs. F. Currie,
Sebewaing, Michigan; Mrs. I. Geiger, Saskatoon; Mrs. L. Miller, New Westminster,
B.C.; Mrs. L. Slotzer, Wilkie, Sask. There are eleven grandchildren.
In his passing, many feel that that they have sustained a personal loss,
for Jack was indeed a good friend and neighbour. He and his good wife
worked unceasingly for nearly five decades to make this world a better
place in which to live. They shared their responsibilities to their
community, their church and social life. Jack was a good farmer and did
not sit idly by whilst others were working to improve conditions that
would be of benefit economically not only to the farmer, but to all. His
life was devoted to service for the welfare of his family and brother man
and his integrity was never questioned. He served as a school trustee
and held offices in many other organizations. He made a wide circle of
friends and his demise is very sincerely regretted by all who enjoyed his
acquaintance. He served on the M.M.S. Board from its organization for
17 years and as President of Decker Pool Elevator Assoc. for 19 years and
was a Director of the Childrens Aid Soc., Brandon and a member of the
Session of Isabella United church. He is going to be sadly missed, but
kindly remembered.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, when a very large number
gathered to pay their last respects to a departed friend and neighbour at
Isabella church. The service was conducted by Rev K.H. Moffatt, assisted by
Rev. H. Bowman, Macdonald, and Student minister, S.A. Walmsley of United
College, Winnipeg. There was a profusion of beautiful floral tributes.
The casket was laid to rest in Isabella cemetery by L. Wright,
R. Buchannan, B. Johnston, J. Wall, A. Norrie, M.S. Johnson.
