James Wellington Warren
1862 - February 16, 1955
Death came on Wednesday, February 16th to one of the pioneer settlers of
the Crandall district and later a citizen of Miniota at the Lady Minto
Home, Minnedosa, in the person of J.W. Warren, 92. For quite a number of
years he has been an invalid and bedridden due to the fact that the
nature of his illness made it necessary to remove a leg.
Born at Palmerston, Ontario, in 1862, he came west in the early 1880's
and his marriage to Catherine Charlotte MacDonald took place at Violadale
in June, 1883. The couple resided in the Hamiota and Crandall
district until 1911, when they took up residence in Miniota. Mrs. Warren,
passed away in July, 1938.
Jim, as he Was more familiarly known, led a very colourful life. In the
earlier days of his life he took a keen interest in the Sport of Kings
and owned trotting horses and he seldom missed mounting his sulky at
the race meets for miles around. Yes, be lived a very full life and his
strong constitution stood him in good stead in the time of adversity.
He also took an interest in public affairs and was a Councillor for
Ward 6 for the years 1931-36 and 1939-42. We are reluctant to lose our
splendid pioneers; but the time must come when the call will come to each
and fill of us.
The funeral was held on Saturday with the service in Holy Trinity
church conducted by Rev. W.A. Hales and was attended by many friends and
neighbours. The casket with its floral tributes was laid to rest in the
family plot in Crandall cemetery by Al. Armitage, J.W. Horner,
J.R. Lynch, W.H. Hurlin, P.C. Watts, H.G. Forsyth.
He is survived by one son, Russell D.L. Warren of Dauphin. There are
five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
